Pit Pony – My Sunday Photo for 29th July 2018
My Sunday photo this week is one of a pit pony I made at the National Coal Mining Museum for England during a visit we made this past week.
This is Finn, a pit pony. Judging by the size of Finn I would imagine a horse his size would’ve worked on the surface rather than down the mine itself.
It’s strange to think pit ponies were better cared for by the mine owners that the human workers. If a human got sick, injured or even died they were daily replaced. But, if it were a pony the owner would have to buy a replacement, and they didn’t come cheap!
