5 Tips to Keep Your Kids Safe in the Car

As a parent, you will do everything in your power to keep your children safe and out of harm’s way. When you’re with them in the car, it can be a constant worry that something will go wrong and they’ll end up hurt. Luckily, there are a number of things we can all do to keep our kids as safe as possible when they’re riding in the car…

1. Keep up with car maintenance

First thing’s first, if you want to keep your kids safe in the car, you need to ensure your car is safe and in good working order, which is why regular  Volkswagen servicing, car maintenance and timely repairs should be at the forefront of your agenda. No matter what other safety measures you take, if your car isn’t in a good, safe condition, your kids will be at risk.

2. Follow the law on car seats

Once their kids reach a certain age, a lot of parents thing keeping them in a car seat is silly, but the car seat laws are there for a good reason – they work. So, unless your child is over the age or height limits for car seat use, be sure to strap then in on each and every journey, no matter how short and make sure that the car seats they’re using are fitted properly, A lot of companies like Halfords will fit and/or check your car seats for you, so there is no excuse not to get it right.

3. Take off coats and blankets

Before putting your kids in their car seats, you should always remove bulky coats and blankets because they can increase the space between your child and the seat’s safety harness, thus making it less effective, and potentially putting them at an increased risk of danger.

4. Turn on the child safety locks

The child safety locks are there for a reason, so use them to keep your kids safely in the car where they need to be. If your car has power windows, it’s also a good idea to ensure that they are locked because kids have been known to trap themselves in the windows and cause themselves various injuries.

5. Don’t leave them alone

It can be tempting to leave your kids in the car for a moment when you pop into the shop or whatever, but this is a bad idea because kids can get into all manner of mischief in a matter of minutes and the car is not a great place for them to be messing around. Not only that, but your vehicle could be hit by another car or otherwise compromised which would not be good, There’s also the possibility you could be taken ill and people would not know your kids were in the car to take into consideration too.

As you can see, keeping your kids in the car is mostly common sense, but it’s a good idea to be mindful of the issues and check out the above every time you take them out, just to be on the safe side.
